Wales! Look East!

January, 2013
Having received nice greeting cards from their Welsh friends Form 4 pupils  and their teachers (Tetyana Chyprynyuk, Lyudmyla Kal'ko) prepared some nice cards to be sent to Wales. The parcel was sent from Norwich while Olena Franchuk visited the High Eccels Hall school in Norfolk. We hope the kids will like the presents as much as the Ukrainians like creating them!!

First Sunday in Advent 2012, Wales, UK
"...The Charles Dickens greatcoat has arrived from my friend the old  Judge, it still fits me, and that's without doubt my favourite event of the year -reading "A Christmas Carol" to groups of children. Most years they are from years 5 and 6 in school, 9,10 or11 years old, but this year at one school for the first time I'm reading to 7 and 8 year olds. I wonder how they will enjoy it?"

Andriivski Vechornytsy in Ukraine
This holiday  is devoted to St Andrew – the disciple of Jesus Christ, who is considered to be the patron of marriage. Obviously , he is a significant figure not only for Scotland, Greece and Russia, but also for Ukraine. He was the person who put his cross on the deserted hills and predicted the great city –Kyiv – the capital of UkraineIn parts of Ukraine superstitious belief exists that the night before St. Andrew's Day is especially suitable for magic that reveals a young woman's future husband or that binds a future husband to her. Many related customs exist: for example, the pouring of hot lead into water (in Western Ukraine, one usually pours hot wax from a candle through a key hole into cold water), divining the future husband's profession from the shape of the resulting piece. In some areas , girls go out and ask the name of the first man they meet – it’ll be the name of the future husband. Another custom is to throw a shoe over one's shoulder: if it lands pointing to the door, the woman will get married in the same year. So, girls gather together on this day . They sing, dance, talk, knit, sew…and  pray to St Andrew for the fortune.

History of the game: This game is famous from Cossack times. Ukrainian cossacks  arranged selection to his troops. Only strong and brave boys could get into the Cossack troops. Running in the bags was one of the trial.
Rules: Many children can participate in the game. Each participant wears a bag on his feet. Then the judge gives the command to run. Who will run the first will be a winner.

March, 2012
St David's Day is celebrated in Wales on March 1. St David is a patron of Wales.
Our partenrs from Clwyd school sent us their national flag to remember this day.
March 1 is a day of celebration of both St David’s life and of the Welsh culture in Wales and in countries such as Canada and the United States. Many people attend special church services, parades, choral recitals or Welsh literature readings. Schools plan celebrations, often involving choirs, on the day.

New Year is a happy family holiday in Ukraine. There is a good tradition to greet friends and relatives and wish them all the best returns on the day. Children were really glad to make toys, greeting cards, small souvenirs to send them to the partner school.

December, 2011
The programme we wish to establish at the present time must be seen as
‘introductory’ in nature.  This academic year ( 2011-2012) the schools will focus on three themes as a means of ‘getting to know’ one another.
Clwyd will send information boxes on:

Theme 1   Christmas

Theme 2   St. David’s Day – a national celebration day in Wales

Theme 3   The Olympics

The theme boxes will contain information, artefacts and planning in relation to activities carried by the pupils.  The aim of the boxes is to give pupils in School 15 a flavour of what happens in a Welsh primary school.

It is hoped that through the two way exchange of boxes both groups of pupils will get to know about the other school and get to know one another as individuals.  It also hoped the teachers will be able to utilize the boxes as a resource for teaching the children about the importance of global citizenship.
